I have been following Son Lux for the past 4 years after hearing Alternate Worlds from their Lanterns album released in 2013. The way Ryan Lott writes his music has this beautiful combination of off kilter syncopated hip hop beats with huge brass and string ensembles with delicate breathy sounding vocals.

In this Tiny Desk Concert from 2015 the band really shows off their musical skill. Especially Ian Chang, the drummer, who has this amazing connection with rhythm and has this hap hazard way of flinging his backwards sticks all over the kit and hitting everything he can while still keeping everything in time.

My favorite part of this video is at 8:10 when they finish off their second song Now I Want. every element has been thought out and every instrument serves it purpose. The complex drumming and simple chord progression accompanied by their signature brass sound makes for such a mesmerizing experience for me.

I stumbled across this video from the "Woodkid and Friends" concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival this year.

Son Lux joined Woodkid up on stage to play a few songs one of them being a rendition of their most successful song Easy.

this song has been made famous through New Zealand artist Lorde who performs it live at her concerts.

The orchestral backing to this just bring so much power to the song. The wall of sound that is thrust forward every time they do the 4 note progression in the chorus sends shivers down my spine.

I am very excited about their new EP especially after the first release, Dangerous is so promising. The riff at the start of this song draws me in because of its non-conventional timing. it looks like they are staying with their unique sound that i have come to love. After stumbling upon these live performances i have decided they are a a band i have to see live before i die.
