SYNTHESIS

Today i will be talking about synthesis and how Point Point Has used it in their song A Piece Of Sun, from their Family Portrait EP. I will be specifically looking at how i can incorporate their techniques into my remix at the end of this subject.

I chose to analyse this song because the whole soundscape is made up of synthesisers. A simple Kick and Clap has been used to keep the beat and a few samples and mallets (again, i love an organic instrument) to creates interest but the rest of the song is made from layering different synth sounds.

I find the first 26 seconds of the song or the intro the most interesting when it comes to Synthesis. You find a chopped, smooth repeating synth ‘sample’ bring in the song and after a very simple variation, a bass synth introduces the rhythm that will continue through the rest of the song. I find this bass synth really interesting and i would love to know how it was created. To me, it sounds like they have layered a very smooth sine wave with a quick, harsh, fast attack, fast release sawtooth wave to create that bitey, but at the same time smooth rhythm. Another thing that i find interesting at this part is the stereo image they have created with a bassline, i think this is done with a delay, but it is interesting to me that they have used a bassline to create the stereo field when we are taught all bass should be centred in the mix. The rest of the synths are relatively centred compared to the bass.

After the intro a ‘squeky’ synth is layered that has a fast oscillator applied to it to create that feeling of it spinning around your head without using panning.

When the chorus comes in an intense synth is used with a lot of the harmonics applied to create that full, aggressive sound.
