I have decided to review a song by an Australian Band called Boo Seeka, the song is called Kingdom Leader. The song falls under the genre of hip-hop, folk, electronica and is Boo Seeka’s debut single.
Kingdom leader sits around 80bpm, with an electronic drum pad being the main instrument used for percussion. The song opens with a rhythmic vocal and snare sample and eases you into the slow groove o
f the heavily delayed kick and snare that is featured throughout the whole song. A smooth synth covers the mid-range frequencies accompanied by some vocal harmonies. A bass guitar is also present for most of the song covering the lower frequencies. A harmonica and piano can also be heard scattered through the song giving the arrangement some interest. The contrast of the crisp vocals and the punchy bass is what makes this song so pleasant to listen too. From a sound engineering point of view, the song is perfectly layered with enough room for each instrument to be clearly heard. You can hear a lot of equalization has been done on the vocals to create space for the other instruments, and it doesn’t spoil the clarity of his voice, but makes it more interesting to listen too.
Kingdom Leader was recorded in Boo Seeka’s bedroom studio and released privately on Triple J Unearthed, where it was picked up by triple j and aired nationally. Boo Seeka has since plays many sold out shows as well as touring with DMA’s and Jarryd James. The need for large labels like Sony, Universal and EMI to curate and release music for audiences had become irrelevant. Small independent record labels and bands are able to record, release and get attention just as successfully as a major labels due to the ease at which audiences can find music online.
