Media That I Value

Media is so entwined in western life that most of it goes unnoticed. Sitting at my desk writing this blog I am consuming music, looking at designs by advertisers, reading articles, listening to my housemates play video games, downloading a movie to watch tonight and talking to people through multiple social media platforms. It is hard for me to single out the types of media that are most important to me because I have become so comfortable with so many types that i cant imagine a life without them. Being a creative person, I feel that the types media I value the most are the ones that aid my creativity and bring me the most enjoyment.

The genre of media that I value most would be music, specifically production and streaming audio. I am an amateur bedroom producer that uses different programs and instruments to create and express my ideas and stories. This is something that I have been doing for a while and it brings me so much enjoyment and satisfaction to create something that can tell a story or be enjoyed by many. Some of the techniques I use to convey an idea or a message can range from creating a fast paced, happy track that uses a tempo of 120bpm and is in a major key to something that is a little more relaxed and slow with a tempo of 95bpm and uses a slow, repetitive 4 chord loop. I don’t use lyrics in the music I create so I rely on composition and melodies to convey the feeling of a song.

I also enjoy consuming music and understanding the emotions and stories that other people try to convey through their music. I prefer to listen to music from streaming services like Google Play Music and Soundcloud. I chose to make the move to music streaming services rather than traditional ownership of music because for only a small fee I can listen to any song ever created (what is available on the streaming service). I enjoy finding and listening to new music just as much as listing to a song that I have enjoyed before so streaming services seem to be a logical fit for my media consumption needs. Another media platform I use is Soundcloud because it allows me to upload my own music to share my own music as well as allowing me listen to independent content crated by people from around the world.
